Rainbow Snippets 11 18 17 Transgender Week

Posted in Blog, Rainbow Snippets

Hello Snippetteers! Here is this week’s contribution to Rainbow Snippets, an awesome Facebook group of authors and bloggers who post snippets from LGBTQ works every weekend. Catch up with all the snippets here: Rainbow Snippets.

This week’s theme is transgender characters. A major secondary character in Sex, Love, and Videogames is Charlie’s cousin Morocco. She is trans. This snippet takes place during her African-American family’s Easter dinner. Nineteen-year-old Morocco finally gets the courage to ask Granny Myrt, the matriarch of the family, to stop dead-naming her.

There was a pause. Morocco lifted her gaze from the tablecloth and faced her grandmother. “Granny Myrt, ma’am, I’d appreciate you calling me Morocco. Or Rocco or Ro. I haven’t wanted to say anything, but I’m not… I don’t think of myself as… as Ronald.” She studied her plate and mumbled, “I hope you understand.”

Granny Myrt appeared troubled. “I don’t believe it’s the Lord’s will for you to be anything other than Ronald, son. I keep praying for you to realize that.” Several of the family opened their mouths as if to speak but she held her hand up. “However, seeing as the Lord has not answered that prayer in many years, I’m wondering if He doesn’t have other plans for you. I’ll pray on it.”

“Thank you, Granny.” Morocco’s voice broke and she brought her napkin to her eyes.
