Rainbow Snippets — A sampling from There You Are
I’m part of a new Facebook group that the wonderful Charley Descouteaux started in which we post six sentences from one of our books or WIPs each weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing the contributions from all the different authors. This weekend I’m posting a snippet from my upcoming novella There You Are, which is on Dreamspinner’s Coming Soon Page.
There You Are is the sequel to my novella Wild and Precious and picks up the story of Cody Bellstrom after he moves to Portland, Oregon. He befriends a young man on the train who is running away to live with his uncle, Phineas MacDonald. Phineas and Cody share an immediate attraction, but each has his own baggage to deal with. This snippet takes place in Powell’s Bookstore coffee shop, a few weeks after they first meet:
Cody fled to the counter, almost joining the old lady in muttering out loud to himself to calm down. Phineas had him in a tizzy, and it didn’t make sense. He wasn’t even his usual type, being ten years older, serious, and sad. Actually, Cody didn’t have a type, having been attracted to many different kinds of people—male and female—over the years. But back to Phineas… there was something in his sensitive face tinged with grief that made Cody want to wrap him up in a blanket and take him to bed. Then do dirty things to him.
Bisexual musician Cody Bellstrom is a free spirit, easygoing and unattached. On a cross-country trip, Cody befriends young Sandy Nixon and gets him safely to Portland and his uncle, Phineas MacDonald. Beautiful Phineas turns Cody’s life upside down, and Cody learns he’s not as unattached as he aspires to be. With the hard-won knowledge of what lies underneath his need to be free, Cody wins a chance at real freedom and true love.
Ever since his longtime lover Allen died, Phineas MacDonald has lived a circumscribed life. He stopped performing as fierce drag queen Phanny Hill and works part-time in a bookstore. Phineas never expected to find love again. But when sexy and caring Cody Bellstrom turns up, Phineas feels his orderly life slipping out of his control. Cody brings him alive again, but now Phineas must find the courage to let go of his grief over Allen and give love a second chance.
